Perennial in USDA zones 4-8. Northern Sea Oats is an ornamental clumping U.S. native grass with foliage reminiscent of bamboo leaves. A relative of true oats, its nodding seed heads dance in the slightest wind. Its foliage and seeds turn a rich coppery red as temperatures cool in autumn, then mature to bronze as winter draws near. You can grow them in garden beds, borders, containers, as a ground cover for large areas, or enjoy them as single specimens. Leave them standing for their fall beauty or cut for dried flower arrangements that last for years. Plants started in early spring will bloom the first year. When to plant outside: Spring, after average last frost. When to start inside: 6 weeks before average last frost. Special Germination Instructions: Seeds germinate best around 70-75 degrees.
